Business information specialist Datamonitor has acquired Verdict Research, a leading UK retail analysis company set-up by former Mintel editorial and marketing director Richard Hyman in 1984.
The company has also announced healthy half-year results, with group profits before tax of [pounds sterling]4.3m. The results are a remarkable turnaround from 2000-2002, when the company made losses of [pounds sterling]7.1m, [pounds sterling]2.7m and [pounds sterling]6.6m respectively.
Datamonitor will pay a maximum of [pounds sterling]4.7m for Verdict Research, with Hyman remaining at the helm for an earn-out period.
Datamonitor chief executive Mike Danson said the takeover will give it "real presence in this important market" - the retail sector is one of six areas that Datamonitor specialises in, including automotive, energy, healthcare and technology.
Danson said: "We see substantial opportunities to really enhance their product delivery through our global electronic platform." The company offers customised research and analysis services, alongside subscription products that can be integrated into customer intranets.
