Oct. 22--Bank of America is Virginia's top lender of Small Business Administration loans.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank was among 84 lending institutions that made SBA loans to the small-business community in Virginia in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.

The SBA's Richmond District approved a record 1,117 loans to small businesses during the 12-month period, 16 percent more than the number of loans approved the previous year.

Total financial assistance to entrepreneurs in Virginia was $227 million.

Bank of America made 192 loans worth $5 million.
