Suzuki's slick Blizzard concept (inset) may arrive later in the form of an option package, but the new, significantly upgraded Grand Vitara is here. The third-generation SUV is larger, more powerful, and boasts a far nicer interior than the seven-year-old ute it replaces. The redesign draws from the X2 concept shown at the New York auto show in March. Grand Vitara's world premiere was last month at Frankfurt; California marks its first public appearance in the United States.
The 2006 model is 11.5 inches longer and 1.2 inches wider, with a 6.3-inch greater wheelbase, giving rear passengers 6.6 inches more legroom. Fold the seats down and there is an additional 18.7 cubic feet of cargo area. The Grand Vitara's overall size is now on par with the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4 (though Toyota will launch its new, larger RAV-4 in December).
Suzuki replaces the old Vitara's body-on-frame construction with a steel unibody featuring a welded-in ladder frame. The idea, Suzuki says, is to combine good on-road handling and smoothness while retaining the off-road ruggedness offered by body-on-frame vehicles.
