Oct. 19--NEWPORT NEWS -- When Ronald D. Sugar stopped by yesterday to meet his local employees, the visit touched thousands of Virginians.

Sugar is chairman, chief executive officer and president of Northrop Grumman Corp., a defense contracting giant whose payroll includes more than 19,000 shipyard workers at Northrop Grumman Newport News.

The shipyard is the United States' sole builder of nuclear aircraft carriers and Virginia's largest industrial employer, but it's now only part of a Los Angeles-based corporation that has 125,000 employees and builds spacecraft as well as ships.
