Oct. 16--WHICH MEDICARE DRUG PLAN IS THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU? To D or not to D? That is the question facing one in seven Oregonians, who can enroll beginning Nov. 15 in one of the many Medicare Part D prescription drug plans being offered in Oregon and Washington.
That answer's easy: Most of Oregon's 567,000 Medicare participants, like those elsewhere, will come out ahead if they enroll. A much tougher question is which plan to choose.
Medicare recipients have been showered with marketing materials in recent weeks from companies pitching their particular costs and benefits. In Oregon, 20 companies offer a total of 73 plans -- enough choices to make your head swim.
"We are concerned that beneficiaries will be overwhelmed and just throw up their hands at the whole process," says Jerry Cohen, director of Oregon's AARP. "There are some 20 entities in Oregon offering plans with different premiums, co-pays, participating pharmacies and medications covered. It can be bewildering."
But it will pay to slog through the information because "for most folks, there will be a cheaper premium and broader coverage if they go with Part D," said Cohen, whose organization sponsors…
