As a former student athlete who worked in and around collegiate athletics for several years, I became interested in the role of the senior woman administrator (SWA) in athletics. I wondered what advice successful SWAs had for current and future ones.

For my 2003 dissertation at Iowa State University titled Intercollegiate athletics' senior woman administrator: A qualitative assessment of her quest for effectiveness and empowerment, I interviewed nine women who have been identified nationally as successful SWAs.
