Using labels to define our work can limit the types of people we reach, said Ronni Sanlo, LGBT resource director at UCLA. "The words, 'lesbian' and 'gay' are white constructs. Most people of color who are not heterosexual do not use those words." If we're using those words to describe our programs and offices, we're not using language that invites people in.
What words are students of color comfortable with? Students in the African American and Latino communities at UCLA prefer the term "same gender loving." Asian and Pacific Islanders use the term "mahoo." The term "intersex" describes those with sex organs for both genders.
