The three women leading nanotechnology research at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell are officially recognized as professors of engineering. But colleagues at the school refer to them as the "nanoqueens."

The three women--Julie Chen, Joey Mead and Carol Barry--earned their titles with a collaboration that brought in more than $8 million in grants to establish two research centers and put U-Mass-Lowell on top of the field.
