Citing low graduation rates for student athletes, NCAA violations and a drunk-driving arrest, University of Cincinnati president Nancy Zimpher fired popular men's basketball coach Bob Huggins in August.
"Character counts," said Zimpher. "Our coaches must be exemplary role models on the court and off." The university hired Zimpher two years ago to improve the school's academic quality. Other college presidents have praised her attempt to clean up the notorious athletics program.
During Huggins' 16 years at Cincinnati, only 28% of his 95 players graduated, one of the lowest rates of any Division I school. Off the court, 21 players were arrested or faced criminal charges during Huggins' tenure.
