Miscues doom Michigan State against Ohio State.

COLUMBUS, Ohio _ Michigan State strong safety Eric Smith described it as chaos.

He was referring to the Spartans' confusion over a botched field-goal attempt that Ohio State returned for a touchdown at the end of the first half. But the quote just as easily could have applied to the manner in which MSU subsequently self-destructed after making that crucial mistake.

Michigan State compiled 456 total yards, held the ball for 40 minutes and 59 seconds, ran for 116 yards against a defense that held teams to an average of 56.2 yards on the ground, forced four turnovers and got 10 points in the process.

And Ohio State still won, 35-24, on Saturday.
