A THOROUGHLY miserable week for Irish football was capped last night when Roy Keane announced his retirement from international football - on this occasion for good.

The 34-year-old Manchester United captain, who first quit the international arena after the Saipan World Cup eruption, broke his silence on his Ireland future at tea-time last night when he issued a short statement confirming his days in green were at an end after 66 appearances for his country.

He follows in the footsteps of Ireland captain Kenny Cunningham who announced his retirement immediately after Wednesday's night failure to reach next month's World Cup …
