Oct. 10--AUBURN, Neb. -- Ruth Gerdes had barely heard about the possibility that the Nemaha County Farm Service Agency would close when the crop-insurance agent started getting phone calls.
"It just doesn't sell that this is for the farmers' benefit," Gerdes said. "At least it doesn't sell to me."
About 40 farmers, businesspeople and public officials gathered at the Auburn City Hall Thursday to poke holes in the federal government's logic for closing more than 700 offices nationwide. They said they rely too much on local FSA workers to allow the U.S. Department of Agriculture to move ahead with its plans.
