MORRISON: Chevy wasn't kidding when it said it was committed to reviving the SS badge: There are no fewer than nine models for 2006. This Malibu Maxx SS features GM's new 3.9-liter V6, an engine it claims is the world's first variable-valve-timing-equipped pushrod. There's strong power and torque, and it feels relatively smooth. I wouldn't drop $25K on this, though; you have a lot of options at this price point.
The new front and rear fascias, 18-inch wheels and tires, and body-colored trim improve the look of a car I did not care for at launch. The big, 3.5-inch dual chrome-tipped exhaust pipes also mark this as more than an everyday Malibu.
I would still like more feedback from the steering, and despite larger brakes, this SS needs more stopping power and improved pedal feel. Also, whoever came up with the shift-handle-mounted switch to actuate the gearbox in manual mode should have stuck to convention. I'd prefer to move the shifter fore and back to change gears rather than fumbling with my thumb.
