Arizona State MTA lost one of its "pioneers" in May 2005, when Janice McCurnin, from Tucson, passed away after years of teaching and serving the local, state and national associations. Her accolades are too numerous to mention here, but they can be summed up by saying that she was the first MTNA national teacher of the year, in 2001.
What greater tribute to McCurnin, who mentored and encouraged many teachers to become certified, than the efforts of the current ASMTA Certification Chair Elaine Dyches, NCTM, (ASMTA 2005 teacher of the year).
