Oct. 9--Medicare's historic new drug coverage will be a help to thousands of elderly and disabled people, but you need to do some legwork first to figure out if you're one of them.
More than 20 companies started pitching dozens of plans in Virginia early this month, for coverage that will begin Jan. 1.
So how do you choose?
On Friday, Medicare will begin providing counselors you can call to help figure out which plan will work best for you. The counselors will be using an online comparison tool. If you have your own computer, you can also access the comparison tool on your own.
Here's a roadmap to follow.
QUESTION: How do I get started?
ANSWER: Get a list of your medications. Most pharmacies will be able to provide you with one, along with how much you spend on them in a year.
On or after Friday, go to the Medicare Web site, www.medicare.gov, and look for a computer program called the Plan Finder.
