Realigning salaries may help attract good staff, but there is more to consider, says Patricia Gray.

Salary scales are under scrutiny as a result of Agenda for Change, but it is important not to consider them in isolation.

A worthwhile starting point is to draw the staff structure of your practice. This is likely to show the practice manager at the top of the 'tree' with branches of accountability for other team members. Drawing the tree may reveal gaps in responsibility, skill shortages or other areas for improvement.
