ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Lester Crawford resigned Friday as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, ending a FDA career that included separate stints as acting FDA commissioner and two months as a confirmed commissioner.

One day following Crawford's announcement, the White House issued a release naming Andrew von Eschenbach, currently director of the National Cancer Institute, as acting FDA commissioner.
