Oct. 7--A government plan to restructure personal debts will involve seven billion baht in principal with half to be written down, Finance Minister Thanong Bidaya says.
As well, he said yesterday, the assistance would apply only to debts on lenders' books before June 30 of this year.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra defended the programme in the face of criticism that it would send the wrong message. After years of dealing with big companies that had "barked and howled" for debt assistance, it was time the government helped ordinary people, he said.
