IRL driver Ryan Briscoe is expected to return to Europe for his two-month recovery period. His plan is to work with Dr. Ricardo Ceccarelli, founder of Formula Medicine in Viareggio, Italy. Briscoe suffered serious injuries in the Sept. 11 accident at Chicagoland.
Briscoe's plans for 2006 are uncertain. He said he'd like to return to Ganassi Racing's IRL program. But he also needs to accept the best career opportunity available, and that might not be in the States.
Chip Ganassi might not have his team in the IRL anyway. There continues to be speculation that Ganassi will switch to Champ Car, although the series' international flavor does not mesh with Target's objectives. Ganassi denies his team will leave the IRL next year.
IRL: Engines staying same
Turns out we've known the IRL's engine specs for 2007 for some time. They're staying the same except for the conversion of fuel to 100 percent ethanol. League president Brian Barnhart said the 3.0-liter, naturally aspirated V8 format is reliable enough to keep, and in theory limits the amount of work Honda and others will have to do. Barnhart said no additional manufacturers have shown enough interest in the IRL. Chevrolet will leave the league after this season, with Toyota making a similar exit after 2006. Will the IRL require manufacturer badging? A change would allow Cosworth and Ilmor, among others, to compete independently.
There are rumors Toyota is looking for a way to get out of its IRL commitment next season, although officials deny it.
