Byline: CURT CAVIN
Celebrations are in the eye of the beholder, so excuse us if we turn the attention away from Andretti Green Racing, which has essentially known for a month that Dan Wheldon was going to win the Indy Racing League championship for the team.
The fun at Watkins Glen International was watching a slew of Ganassi Racing personnel acting giddy in victory lane. It seemed like every member of the Target-sponsored group took every opportunity to pose for photographs with the car and driver (Scott Dixon) that won the race.
At one point, team owner Chip Ganassi leaned in to jab his happy mates. "You guys act like you've never won a race before,'' he said, smiling.
Sunday's other victor was Danica Patrick, who came home 16th and won Rookie of the Year, the first woman to win it in Indy car racing.
Ganassi hasn't been able to celebrate for a long time. Dixon last won a race in June of 2003, a dominating effort at Richmond (Virginia) International Raceway that was part of his championship-winning season. He led only three laps last year, and they preceded his crash in this season's opening race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Dixon reached Watkins Glen with a 40-race losing streak, the longest in the IRL. Tensions were beginning to mount. Ganassi rode him hard.
