Oct. 6--Finance Minister Thanong Bidaya wants MCOT Plc, the operator of television Channel 9, to launch a global English-language channel as part of a plan to make its shares more attractive.
Under the plan, the Finance Ministry, which holds a 77 percent stake in MCOT, would sell some of its shares to the public if the partially privatised broadcaster does not have enough funds for the investment, according to Mr Thanong.
At the moment, he said, "selling shares in MCOT to increase its liquidity does not make sense. If we did so so, it would spark doubt among the public as to why the ministry would dump the shares of such a profitable firm."
