Police will be out in force on the Canberra region roads armed with the threat of double-demerit points this long weekend in an effort to keep the ACT's road toll from rising past 11.

Double-demerit points for speeding and seat-belt offences - and an additional point for many other offences - are in place until Tuesday morning for those caught breaking the road rules. Long weekends with double- demerit points are usually road- death free in the ACT, largely because so many Canberrans leave the territory, but police believe the threat of extra punishments and their high-visibility saturation coverage also help keep people driving …
