Facilities management MEDICAL AID FOR BUILDINGS Anybody can manage the costs of a building, say facilities managers. But few are prepared to shoulder the day-to-day risks of utility expenses, machinery breakdowns and occupational safety provisions.

"Facilities management isn't just about fixing a broken geyser anymore," says Ken Goodenough, MD of Facilities Management Africa (FMA), a subsidiary of RMB Properties (RMBP). FMA has adopted a risk-based model, which means that the facilities manager contracts to guarantee operating costs at a property over, say, 20 years.
