Japan panel says gender equality not a factor in question of female succession.

Tokyo, 25 April: A government panel on imperial succession agreed Monday [25 April] the notion of gender equality will not be a factor for them in discussing whether to allow a female to ascend the throne.

"This is a historical issue for Japan, and is different from the problem of gender equality," Hiroyuki Yoshikawa, a former University of Tokyo president who heads the panel, said during a news conference.

"Imperial succession is facing a great crisis, and we will discuss how we can overcome it," Yoshikawa said. …
