Islamic Bank opens accounts to help poor in troubled South.

Oct. 4--The Islamic Bank of Thailand will begin offering Zakat accounts, in line with Muslim tradition, with a focus on assisting Muslims in the country's three southernmost provinces, according to the bank's director Aroon Bunchom.
Zakat is an essential principle that outlines the duty of Muslims to allocate some of their property to the poor, Zakat officials, indebted people, new religious adherents and travellers.
Assets that can be donated to Zakat accounts include gold, silver, livestock, grain and assets required for a business. The amount specified is the equivalent of 2.5 percent of one's savings, to be ...
