The ever-changing world of wireless communications can be daunting, but Woody Hobbs likes it that way. He knows that complexity is good for business.

Hobbs is the chief executive of Intellisync, which sells software to simplify and connect mobile communications.

The San Jose, Calif., company last week unveiled a new service called the Unified Messaging Platform. The idea is to bring together all sorts of mobile messages -- e-mail, voice mail, text messages and instant messages -- and let users access them through one interface. It will be available in November.

"No matter what device or operating system you pick, we'll support it," Hobbs said.

Hobbs has shifted his company's business model over the past 18 months. Intellisync had sold its software to makers of wireless devices. Now it sells directly to wireless carriers, who offer it as part of their services.

After swimming in red ink during the late 1990s and early 2000s, the company is poised to turn a profit next year.
