1President Bush's nomination of White House counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court was greeted warily by many conservatives and Democrats alike. Miers, the first female head of the Texas State Bar, would be just the 3rd woman on the court. She has never been a judge or taken high-profile political stands. Factories Perked Up Last Month
2The ISM manufacturing index surged 5.8 points -- the best monthly gain since '91 -- to 59.4%, a 14-month peak, a sign of economic strength despite Sept.'s hurricanes. Economists expected a small drop to 52%, not far above the boom-bust 50 line. Indexes for orders, output and hiring rose. High Fuel Costs To Last Months
3Energy Sec'y Samuel Bodman said high gasoline and heating fuel prices will last at least 6 months due to storm damage to Gulf Coast rigs and refineries. It's the longest estimate yet by the Bush administration, which launched a conservation effort. Crude fell 77 cents to $65.47 a barrel. But retail gasoline prices rose 12.5 cents last week to $2.93 a gallon. More on B12
