I am not exactly sure when this Brazilian-style jazz material was originally recorded, but as best I can tell by the copyright indications on the box, it should have been about 1990. This means that it probably was not specifically transcribed with surround sound in mind, although most recording sessions would probably provide some of the required multi-track feeds.
As such, this release sounds very good, indeed. As is typical with SACD (and DVD-A) re-releases, a discrete center channel is not provided, although the phantom imaging that is provided by the left and right channels is quite good. From anywhere near the sweet spot, a pair of properly towed in and reasonably directional pair of main-channel speakers will soundstage quite nicely.
