Byline: MOREY STETTNER
Most chief executives attract friends and allies with ease and maintain a calm, cool demeanor. Donny Deutsch is different.
As chairman of Deutsch Inc., a $2.7 billion New York-based advertising firm, Deutsch has his share of detractors. In his new book, "Often Wrong, Never In Doubt," he writes that many people perceive him negatively and resent his success.
Deutsch admits that he curses and raises his voice. His tendency to express strong, often polarizing opinions can get him in trouble. He once screamed at a client and called him "bipolar." Deutsch laments that outburst and marvels that his client stayed on board.
Deutsch sold his ad agency to the Interpublic Group of Companies in November 2000 for $280 million.
As host of a nightly television talk show on CNBC, "The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch," he interviews celebrities and news makers on a range of topics.
IBD spoke with Deutsch about his contrarian approach to winning people over.
