Indexes Rise For Week, Quarter
1The Nasdaq led Friday with a 0.5% gain, while the Dow edged up 0.2% and the S&P 500 0.1%. The small-cap S&P 600 index rose 0.3%. Volume was lighter across the board. For Q3, the S&P 600 gained 5.1%, Nasdaq 4.6%, S&P 500 3.1% and the Dow 2.9%. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.33%, the highest in 6 weeks. More on this page, B2
Personal Income, Outlays Drop
2Personal income surprisingly fell 0.1% in Aug., as Hurricane Katrina bit into rental income and salary growth slowed. Spending fell 0.5%, the worst drop in years, after auto purchases dived. The savings rate improved, but stayed negative. The report's inflation gauge rose 0.5%, the most in 15 years. The core reading, closely watched by the Fed, rose 0.2%. See Vital Signs on A2
Gasoline, Heatoil Sink On Expiry
3As Oct. contracts expired, gasoline sank 11.35 cents to $2.1381 a gallon, and heating oil fell 5.74 cents to $2.0673. Nov. futures slid less. Nov. oil fell 55 cents to $66.24 a barrel. Gulf production is still nearly shut. 12 refineries remain shut, cutting gasoline output by 1.3 mil barrels a day. Nov. natgas fell 27.5 cents to $13.921 per mil Btu. More on B15
