Australia's annual budget describes Papua New Guinea [PNG] and the Solomon Islands as fragile states. The budget, released in Canberra last night, says PNG and the Solomons highlight the challenges faced by fragile states in the Pacific. The foreign minister, Alexander Downer, announced that a Fragile States Initiative will bring together all aspects of Australian work in the Pacific. Covering aid, security, economic and political issues.
