(From Irish Independent)
THE Rossport Five were released yesterday after 94 days behind bars. That was at least 90 days too long for a group of decent men who clearly had no agenda other than to protect their families from what they saw as a serious threat.
Yesterday's court decision was a victory for common sense. The pity is that it could not have come weeks ago. But at least it has come now and it is welcome.
To be fair to the Minister, Noel Dempsey, he has worked hard to find a solution.
And it was his setting up of an independent safety review of the project that made yesterday's release of the men possible.
No work can take place while that review is underway. The review will involve public hearings and its report will not be available until early November.
By then, the company says, the weather will not be reliable enough to proceed with further work. So all work is stopped until next year.
