A GROUP OF RETIRED MILITARY OFFICERS, including some involved in previous coup attempts, rallied behind an embattled general and a colonel who defied President Macapagal-Arroyo, and warned of growing restlessness in the Armed Forces.
Brig. Gen. Francisco Gudani and Lt. Col. Alexander Balutan may have earned the ire of their superiors, including their Commander in Chief, but they won the backing of 46 retired officers, including several generals, who signed a manifesto of support for the pair.
Be it known to all that we strongly support General Gudani and Colonel Balutan and all other patriotic officers who shall come out and speak out for truth and uphold the much-needed reform in the Armed Forces, the officers said in their manifesto.
Gudani and Balutan have been relieved of their posts and are facing court-martial proceedings for defying an executive order forbidding senior government officials from appearing at congressional hearings without the consent of Ms Arroyo.
In their manifesto read to reporters, the retired officers said what the two sacked officers did was the highest form of patriotism and courage and a most noble and honorable act that is worth emulating.
