(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
A SENIOR MEMBER OF THE ROMAN Catholic Church of the Philippines yesterday added his voice to the general condemnation of President Macapagal-Arroyos Executive Order No. 464.
Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, through his spokesperson Msgr. Achilles Dakay, said the EO encroached on the powers of Congress.
Dakay said Vidal feared that the EO might lead to what some groups had called creeping martial law, and was bothered that the issue had to be brought to the Supreme Court.
He also said the cardinal was worried that if the decision of the tribunal would favor the executive branch, some sectors might begin to doubt the judiciary.
Survival
According to an administration senator who asked not to be named, the President issued EO 464 to maintain the loyalty of the Armed Forces and her Cabinet officials and thus ensure her political survival.
