(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
CALAMBA CITYDESPITE THE SCATH-ing heat of the sun, more than 2,000 people attended the funeral march for Diosdado Ka Fort Fortuna, the slain leader of the striking union of Nestle Philippines who was buried at a public cemetery here in Barangay Hornalan on Thursday afternoon.
Amid calls for justice for the murdered labor leader, the mourners and Fortunas family blamed the military and President Macapagal-Arroyo for allegedly masterminding the killings of perceived political opponents and dissidents like Fortuna.
Fortunas wife, Luz, said she still couldnt believe that a good man like my husband was killed mercilessly in broad daylight.
They could have just talked to him. Why did they have to kill him that way? My husband wanted nothing but fair treatment for ordinary workers like him, Luz said sobbing.
Fortuna, 50, was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding armed men last week while he was on his way home in Barangay Paciano Rizal this city.
He was the president of the Union of Filipro Employees-Drug and Food Alliance, the group of workers of the Nestle plant in Cabuyao, Laguna who have been on strike for three years now over differences in the collective bargaining agreement.
