AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS of mating and nesting, two pairs of critically endangered hornbills have successfully bred in captivity at Mari-it Conservation Park in Lambunao, Iloilo, producing three fledglings that are now the toast of conservation circles worldwide.
The captive breeding of the Visayas writhed-billed hornbill (Aceros waldeni), is said to be the first in the world, according to Lucia Lastimoza, director of Mari-it Conservation Park.
A result of 10 years of experiment, it buoyed up hopes that the bird will be saved from extinction.
The 6-month-old fledglings were named Glory, Mickie and Lulu, after President Macapagal-Arroyo, Environment Secretary Michael Defensor and Lourdes Aranador, the president of West Visayas State University (WVSU) that hosts the conservation park.
Lastimoza said the young birds were so named because of their namesakes generous support to conservation work.
