ACTOR RICHARD GOMEZ BEcame the first show biz big fish to face the wrath of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, which charged him with four counts of tax evasion yesterday before the Metropolitan Trial Court in Pasig City.
In a 14-page complaint, State Prosecutor Perfecto Lawrence Chua Cheng said there were reasonable grounds to believe that (Gomez) committed the violation for which he is being charged.
Bail was set at P20,000 for each of the four counts of tax evasion. If convicted, the ally of former President Joseph Estrada could land in prison with a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Chua Cheng said one strong evidence against Gomez was that he tried to belatedly file his income tax for the years 2000 to 2003.
Thus, the absence of any evidence submitted by the respondent that he was granted an extension by the BIR commissioner for the filing of his income tax returns on April 27 for his returns for taxable years 2000, 2001 and 2003, his filing thereof did not operate to cure the violation already committed by him, the DOF complaint said.
