TWENTY-FOUR FILIPINOS have sued the US Embassy and the State Department for allegedly breaking US laws by permanently rejecting their visa applications simply because they had admitted using prohibited drugs when they were young, the Filipinos American lawyers said yesterday.
In a statement released by their Manila office, the law firm Reeves and Associates, which specializes in immigration and nationality law, said the lawsuit aims to force the embassy to recognize statutes and regulations that eliminate long past experimentation with drugs as a reason to bar US entry to would-be immigrants.
It said the complainants or plaintiffs are spouses or children of Filipinos who are already US citizens or legal permanent residents living in California, Nevada, New Jersey, New York and Oregon.
