SIX-YEAR-OLD MAJAH EUnice Huyaban is your typical little girl who loves to play house. She enjoys listening to Sarah Geronimos songs and attending Sunday school.
This picture of a sprightly child with a bright future has but one taintMajah, who is in Kinder 2 at the La Paz Christian Learning Center in Iloilo City, may not live long enough to enjoy much of her childhood unless the hole in her heart is sealed and the blood flow to her heart is restored to normal.
The ductus arteriosus is a wide muscular blood vessel joining the pulmonary artery to the aorta (main artery to the body). This connection allows blood to be diverted from the lungs into the aorta during fetal development since the baby does not breathe until after delivery. The ductus arteriosus normally closes after birth.
In Majahs case, the ductus arteriosus failed to close and so her enlarged heart is overworked while her lungs have fluid, further increasing its workload, according to her pediatrician, Dr. Doris Mendoza.
There is still hope for Majah if the hole in her heart (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) is operated on as soon as possible, she said.
