AFTER MALACANANG REvoked its controversial P50-million contract with a US lobby firm to get US funding for Charter change, the Consultative Commission for the revision of the 1987 Constitution has asked for an increase in its P10-million budget.
Secretary general Lito Lorenzana said they would need more funds to finance the regional consultations and more staff to complete their work within the three-month deadline imposed by President Macapagal-Arroyo. This was according to a statement issued by Lorenzana after the Concoms second meeting last Thursday.
Ms Arroyo created the Concom to study and propose possible revisions in the Charter, including the shift from the presidential-unitary form of government to a federal-parliamentary system. She gave the Concom up to Dec. 15 to finalize the revisions which she would submit to Congress during the Charter debates.
Given an initial allocation of P10 million, Concom was mandated to conduct nationwide consultations to reflect the peoples sentiments on what changes should be made in the Charter.
