SEVENTH SEED MICHAEL BASCO YIELDED four of the first six games but came charging back to stun top seed William McNamee of Australia yesterday and seize a semifinal berth in the second leg of the Phinma-ITF junior tennis championships.
The 17-year-old Basco worked behind a strong service game and stealy nerves to take 10 of the last 11 games for a 6-4, 6-1 humiliation of the heavily favored Australian at the Ynares Socio-Cultural and Sports Center in Pasig.
Bascos surprise win duplicated the feat compatriot Pablo Olivarez II who also eliminated McNamee in the semifinals of the world-ranking tournaments first leg last week at the same venue.
I guess I was more mentally prepared than (McNamee), said Basco, who fell by the wayside in the second round last week. I refused to change my gameplan despite his lead in the first set.
Basco didnt blink despite McNamees steady, aggressive play that gave the Australian a 4-2 lead in the first set.
