KAJANG: A Nepalese spent 51 days in Kajang prison and received a stroke of the rotan - all for nothing.

Mangal Bahadur Gurung, 30, was sentenced to 10 months jail and a stroke of the rotan by the Petaling Jaya magistrate's court on March 23, 18 days after he was arrested in an Ops Tegas raid.

Yesterday, Mangal was released from the prison after Judicial Commissioner Datuk Zaharah Ibrahim set aside his conviction and ordered that he be released immediately.

The court agreed with his lawyer's contention that he was wrongly convicted as he had a valid passport and working permit.
