In the days following the landfall of Katrina, AIR dispatched three teams of engineers to assess the damage. They visited affected towns throughout the hurricane's wide swathe of damage, which covered parts of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

New Orleans was inaccessible to any but emergency workers, but the AIR teams were able to survey from Slidell, across the north side of Lake Ponchartrain - some of the areas of Louisiana with the worst damage.

On these pages, you will see a photographic essay of the teams' experiences.

It illustrates both the geographic extent of the damage and the destructive effect of the forces of wind and water. AIR's survey confirms that Katrina was the largest storm of its intensity ever to hit the US coastline.

The map depicts AIR's modelled wind speeds for Hurricane Katrina. AIR engineers surveyed all cities highlighted on the map during AIR's initial post-disaster survey, and will conduct further surveys in coming weeks.
