Byline: Janette Neuwahl And Julia Neyman
Sep. 29--Steven F. Schumacher spent many of his afternoons sipping a Budweiser and chatting with a homeless person at the Cubby Hole bar in Fort Lauderdale.
Many times, he'd buy lunch for those less fortunate than himself, a bartender there said.
"He had a soft spot for street people," said Moht Shortnacy, who served Schumacher drinks over lunch for the past seven years at the bar.
But Shortnacy worried that Schumaker's giving nature went too far sometimes -- especially when he offered his shower to strangers who were down on their luck.
On Tuesday, investigators found the 72-year-old man dead in his Oakland Park apartment. They suspect foul play.
Deputies visited the Cubby Hole later that day, showing a photo of Schumacher and delivering the bad news to Shortnacy.
