Vietnam has conducted a large-scale evacuation for nearly 300,000 people living along the coastline stretching from northern Quang Ninh province to central Ha Tinh province where fierce tropical storm Damrey, the strongest for nine years, was forecast to smash in early this morning or this noon after raging China's Hainan Island yesterday.

Over 51,000 residents in northern Nam Dinh province, 76,000 in northern central Thanh Hoa province, 4,000 households in central Nghe An province and 39,714 people in central Ha Tinh province, mostly children, women and the old have been moved to safe places such as concrete schools and offices, …
