Ivybridge...22 Barnstaple...17 Ivybridge upset the formbook with a win over fancied Barnstaple - and deservedly so.

Barum arrived at Cross-in-Hand as strong tips for a place in the top two in Western Counties this season, but seldom looked like a side that sure of challenging for promotion.

They were playing catch-up rugby for most of the second half after going 22-5 down on 50 minutes after giving away a penalty try.

The North Devon outfit chipped away at the lead in the last half hour, but only got within a score with five minutes left and ran out of time to put too much pressure on Ivybridge.

"It was a great result for us and will make a few people sit up and take notice," said Ivybridge chairman Jim Edington, himself a former Barnstaple player in the 1970s.

"It was pretty even up front, but where we were on top was when we ran at them.
