Ever been driving along a country road and notice a freshly painted sign at a roadside restaurant, "We've changed our name but not our food"? Puzzling isn't it? Well, a couple of weeks ago, this column (formerly New Age IS) did the editorial equivalent; we changed our name but not our focus. Sure, you can expect to see a few new topics on the menu, but the content will remain pure cooking by Currid. But from now until another reason comes to change it, this column will be "Civilized Computing."

I'd like to tell you a little about what the change means and why the editors of InfoWorld and I decided to make it. There are two primary reasons: association and maturity. …
