TV talk show host turned lawmaker Lee Ao asked Minister of National Defense Lee Jye yesterday if a NT$12,000 Mont Blanc pen can be considered a gift meant to win support for a US$18 billion armed purchase from the United States.

The old but feisty independent legislator showed the expensive French-made pen at a defense committee meeting and said Lee Jye gave it to him as a present.

"A present for what?" Lee Ao asked.

He is one of the strongest opponents to the purchase of eight submarines, three Patriot ground-to-air missile batteries and anti-submarine helicopters.
