Cigarettes too cheap, should be NT$200 a pack, experts say.

"A pack of cigarettes should be priced at NT$200," declared a panel of local and foreign experts yesterday during a conference held by the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI) aimed to discuss strategies to reduce the harm caused by tobacco products.

If the price of cigarettes rise from the current NT$50 a pack to NT$200, the smoking population in Taiwan will be halved in 10 years, claimed the NHRI. There are 4.5 million smokers island-wide, estimated the experts. If the price is raised, the smoking population will decrease to approximately 2.25 million in a decade, they added.
