Niigata, Japan, 8 June: Charles Jenkins, a former US army sergeant who deserted to North Korea during the Cold War and now lives in Japan, will visit the United States with his Japanese wife, Hitomi Soga, a former abductee repatriated from North Korea, and their two daughters, sources close to Soga said Wednesday [8 June].

The US embassy in Tokyo issued a passport for Jenkins in May. Jenkins, 65, is from Rich Square, North Carolina, and has expressed the desire to visit his mother, in her 90s, whom he has not seen for at least 40 years.
